It isn't just coffee that makes The Bean what it is. It's the friendly employees, the freshly baked (from scratch) muffins and pastries, and the atmosphere. According to Berni Patera, owner of The Bean, each location has its own character; while the northside Bean is a typical, homey coffeehouse, the southside Bean is a bustling restaurant with a more extensive menu.
A coffeehouse can be a complicated thing to run, but Patera claims that simple consistency in the quality of food and service will dictate success. "We're just trying to do everything we do really well," Patera said, emphasizing that quality should be valued over quantity.
