Summary

The performance of Comanche dances in Ranchos de Taos, Talpa, and Llano Quemado on New Year's Day is an interesting mix of cross- cultural historical influences. These locals are descendants of captive nomadic American Indians who were ransomed from the people of the Comanche and adopted by Hispanic families. They are also descendants of a band of Comanche who took up residence in that area in the 18th century.

Given that the ancestral captives were of various tribal groups, one might ask why Comanche songs and dances are preserved. Levi Mondragn Jr., leader of Comanche heritage performers in Los Crdovas once explained that, "when Comanches took in captives, whatever their tribal origin, it was their custom to teach them the songs and dances, to help make them part of their culture."
