Living with the Hantavirus is a fact of life in the Southwest and when finding a mouse nest, most people reach for the bleach. Bleach is harsh, but very effective and recommended by the national Center for Disease Control (CDC). If the surface being cleansed is tough, use a bleach solution of 1 1/2 cups bleach to one gallon of water; if a sensitive surface, use hot water and regular laundry detergent, which breaks down the virus' lipid envelope, rendering it harmless. Machine dry laundry on high or, hang it to dry in the sun. The CDC does not recommend simply running infected clothing through the dryer without washing first. For best results, follow these guidelines:
