Two environmental groups have filed a federal lawsuit in an attempt to stop Catron County officials from killing "problem wolves" that endanger humans, livestock and domestic animals.

The Santa Fe-based Forest Guardians and Sinapu in Boulder, Colo., are challenging a county ordinance that was amended in April to authorize "removal" of gray Mexican wolves. Considered an endangered species, the animals were reintroduced by federal authorities to the Gila and Apache national forests in recent years.
