Four Vie for Unm Branch's Top Job

Summary

Andy Dennison

Four finalists for the job of campus director at University of New Mexico- Taos (UNM-Taos) will face a search committee and a community forum during visits to the campus. Three men and one woman were chosen by an 11-member search panel out of dozens of applications to compete for the top job at the branch college. All four will visit the campus from April 30 to May 3. Interim Campus Director Catherine "Kate" O'Neill will be joined in the final-four by Wade Hobgood, former chancellor of North Carolina School of the Arts; Enrique Lamadrid, professor of Spanish and Portuguese at UNM in Albuquerque; and Refugio Rochin, professor emeritus of Chicano studies and agricultural and managerial economics at University of California- Davis. The quartet of finalists will compete to fill the seat left vacant by Alycia Chvez, who abruptly left the post in May 2006. O'Neill, who was head of Professions and Liberal Arts Academy, was selected as a temporary replacement until the search was completed. The naming of a permanent campus director comes at a critical time for UNM-Taos. Construction on a new classroom building is winding up, and a groundbreaking for a daycare/early childhood development center at the Klauer Campus is slated for the spring. Enrollment has stabilized at the school, which offers two-year associate's degrees and several four-year bachelor's degrees for about 1,200 students.
