'SPEED RACER' PUTS THE PEDAL TO THE DIGITAL METAL

I hate to rain on anybody's parade, but the original 1960s "Speed Racer" cartoon was really not very good. Its animation was cookie- cutter crude and its stories simplistic. I suppose for its time it rocked enough to become a cultish fave, but when Andy and Larry Wachowski, the reclusive brothers who revolutionized modern special effects-oriented filmmaking with "The Matrix" trilogy, turned to update anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida's kiddie show, they threw the power and might of their talents behind it.
