For nine days before Christmas, the Catholic faithful of Taos commemorate "Las Posadas," a celebration of Mary and Joseph's cold and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter ("Posada" in Spanish, means lodging or shelter). Mary and Joseph were called to Bethlehem by Caesar Augustus to be counted in the Roman census. The couple ended up staying in a manger, where the baby Jesus was born.
