'Trust' Leads to Rehab Center'sopening

Summary

Andy Dennison

For Clorinda Gonzales and the Father Terry Brennan, it's a longtime dream come true. For Taosenas who struggle with substance abuse, it's a sudden chance at a healthy future. After five years of dogged pursuit, the Trust in God Rehabilitation Center became a reality for all parties Thursday (Aug. 9) when organizers and dignitaries converged on the new women-only rehab for Taos County. "There's no model for this," said Brennan, who could not stop grinning as the renovated double-wide filled up with supporters. "We don't know of any such program in New Mexico or elsewhere." Three women, referred either by the courts or medical authorities, soon will take up residence in the 1,900-squarefoothomenext door to the Taos County Sheriff's Office off Blueberry Hill Road. The women will cook their own meals, make their beds and participate in group and individual counseling to get control of their addictions, Brennan said. Residential stays typically will last two-three months, although if additional funding comes in, they could be extended. Right now, the center pays its utilities and staff through Medicaid and a $120 per diem from the state's health services contractor, Value Options. Taos County gave the land for the center at a cost of $1, and the three bedroom, three-bath building was hauled up from Crdovas. During the last two years, volunteers have installed electricity and plumbing, and finished the insides with cabinets, carpet and paint.
