My name is Scott Resnick and I am a board-certified OB/GYN who has performed hundreds, if not a thousand, surgical cases at Holy Cross Hospital. I am writing to disagree with the comments published in The Taos News Jan. 17 by attorney Samuel Bergman that, "I would strongly urge anyone who is going into surgery at Holy Cross Hospital to do so with caution." The direct implication is that anesthesia administered by a nurse anesthetist at our hospital carries an undue risk, relative to ... what?

Fresh from a prestigious university-based training program in Denver seven years ago, I too initially carried the big-city bias that a nurse anesthetist was inferior to a medical doctor. Having worked closely with all of the anesthesia providers, I can say that the qualifications and capabilities of each of the nurse anesthetists is unparalleled. As a regional hospital, with a large number of indigent and high-risk patients relegated to our care, we do not have the luxury of "turfing" these patients to larger centers as is seen in big cities.
